Getting started

If you accept the estimate, we send you the invoice. As soon as payment is received, you receive an email with the list of documents we need to complete your application.

Basic document needs
Phone photos are fine. You bring the originals to the station. Your checklist after payment lists exactly what your case needs.
- A copy of your ID
- The expired licence (front and back)
- Your competency certificate, even if it has also expired
- Proof of where you live, not older than three months
- Proof of your safe
- Any letters you have received from SAPS about the firearm

Expired firearm licence: frequently asked questions
South Africa, Firearms Control Act, through your local SAPS Designated Firearms Officer.
No. Once the expiry date has passed, the licence cannot be renewed; there is no late-renewal route in the Act. You apply again, with a new licence application for the same firearm and an extra page explaining the expiry. We prepare these every week.
The firearm is no longer licensed, so keep it locked in your safe and do not carry or use it. Check your competency certificate date, because it must be valid before the new licence application can go in. Then apply again; do not leave it.
Not simply because it lapsed. The courts have confirmed that owners whose licences expired may apply again. Keep the firearm safely stored, do not use it, and get the new application in. If you decide you no longer want the firearm, voluntary surrender is a separate route we can also prepare.
The new licence application (SAPS 271) with the expired-licence annexure, not the renewal form. Handing in the renewal form for an expired licence is one of the most common mistakes. We complete the correct forms for you.
Competency first. A competency renewal application goes in, and the new licence application is prepared ready to hand in the moment the certificate arrives. We tell you the order and can quote both together.
A renewal handed in after the 90-day window is often treated as if the licence had expired. Message us with your dates and whether you have a stamped receipt; Cathy will tell you what can legitimately be followed up and whether a new application is the safer route.
The same as any new licence. SAPS’s own target is 120 working days. Three to six months is common, and longer is not unusual. Nobody can speed SAPS up. A complete file is the only thing that shortens the wait, because an application sent back for corrections starts the clock again.
No. Until the new licence is issued you may not use the firearm or buy ammunition for it. Keep it locked away.

No. You hand in your own application at your police station; nobody may do that for you. We are an independent private company, not SAPS, and we cannot guarantee a decision. We make sure your file is complete and correct. SAPS decides.
